Today [June 19th] is Juneteenth, the day we commemorate the formal abolition of slavery in the U.S. This is a day of celebration. It is also a day when we are asked to consider promises of freedom not fully realized. As protests demanding racial justice continue throughout our nation, this week’s meditation comes from the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II. Bishop Barber is the co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and serves as President of Repairers of the Breach. Last Sunday he spoke at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The video link to his powerful message is here. His sermon, titled “America, Accepting Death is Not an Option Anymore,” begins at 49:30 and ends at 1:32:30. I urge you to listen to listen to the entire address—it is prophetic and well worth your time.
