Join seminarian Caroline Peacock in exploring themes of retreat and withdrawal during this year's Lenten season. For five weeks, during the 9:30-10:30 am Adult Education hour on Sundays, we will explore themes of retreat in Jesus' life and the lives of Christian mystics such as Julian of Norwich. We will discover together how our prayer life during periods of retreat and withdrawal can strengthen us to emerge into the world, living boldly, with integrity, and working for justice.

Abstract: What happens when you mix atheist liberationists, a closeted bishop, an overextended priest, and a lesbian candidate for ordination? The answer is found on the premises of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles, a New York congregation that served as an unlikely host to the gay liberation groups that proliferated in the years following the 1969 Stonewall Riots. This lecture recounts an important episode in the little-known history of liberal religious support for gay rights and, in doing so, challenges stock narratives that cast sexual freedoms and religious pieties as inevitable political enemies.
