Dear Members & Friends of Holy Apostles,
The season is well underway. The turkey now digested. The first Advent Candle lit. The countdown to Christmas marked with shopping bargains and an endless array of entertainment. It's that familiar season which, as a friend of mine puts it, "we love to love and love to hate." New York sparkles in this season and who cannot help but be entranced with all its lights and sounds. Yet, it can also be overbearing at times. Expectations of our having to be joyful and merry can conflict with the sense of our own loss and brokenness, which the holidays can actually accentuate.
At Holy Apostles, this season takes on yet another dimension. Fundraisers and meeting with the press mark this month's calendar. It is a time when poverty and homelessness suddenly emerge into the limelight. Opportunities to make people aware of basic human need and opportunities to encourage generosity abound. About half of all our revenue for the soup kitchen comes during the holiday season.
In this incredibly busy time, there is much to look forward to. I try to stay merry and joyful. And, to be honest, I find myself at times looking forward above all to kneeling at the crèche in silence and singing a hymn in our darkened church illuminated only by our flickering candles.
Sincerely,
Glenn
