WELCOME AND WORSHIP
We enjoy getting together and value our time with one another. Members of the Hospitality Guild provide food for the coffee hour following Sunday services and coordinate potluck meals for holidays and other festive occasions. Our Parish Life Committee organizes social gatherings and celebrations to which all are welcome.
Sacristans prepare the altar for services, and care for vestments and other items used in the liturgy. Ushers and Greeters welcome people as they arrive, answer questions from visitors, and assist with practical and logistical aspects of worship. Healing Ministers offer anointing and prayer for individuals after they receive Communion.
Lectors read the lessons assigned for the day from the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament and they lead the Prayers of the People. Acolytes wear robes and assist at the altar as crucifers, torch bearers, thurifers and chalicists. Lay Eucharistic Ministers bring prayer and sacrament from worship to those who are hospitalized or homebound.
Our musicians raise their voices in song and make a joyful noise to God at our 11 am service and on feast days and other special liturgies. Anyone interested in joining the choir is invited to audition with our Director of Music.
RESOURCES AND STEWARDSHIP
Those interested in advising on matters related to the financial wellbeing of our church and its ministries work with clergy and staff members on budgets and the allocation of our financial resources.
Buildings and Beautification
Our historic and beautiful church is used for worship, hosting our soup kitchen guests, and many community events every week and throughout the year. The Building Committee oversees the maintenance and improvement of our existing structures. The Garden Committee organizes the tending of our outdoor spaces, the arrangement of flowers for Sundays and special occasions, and the care of our rooftop beehives.
This group offers awareness of opportunities to be involved at Holy Apostles, encourages an understanding of stewardship as an ongoing spiritual commitment, and organizes the themes, speakers, and forums and written materials included in the annual Stewardship Campaign every fall.
HOSPITALITY AND MISSION
Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen
Since 1982, every weekday without fail we have offered a hot meal to anyone who has come to our doors in need of food. Programs and population have expanded over the years, but we remain true to Jesus’ command to serve others and provide for people who are vulnerable. Parishioners are always welcome to volunteer at any time, and on holidays ten spaces are specifically reserved for volunteers from the congregation.
On the third Sunday of every month, we prepare bag lunches after our 11:00 service for the Madison Square Park congregation of Ecclesia Ministries New York, an interdenominational outreach ministry with people living in the streets. Our Rector celebrates the Holy Eucharist in the park at 2:00 pm that same day, and all are welcome to attend.
Social and Economic Justice Committee
Continuing the strong legacy of social outreach efforts at Holy Apostles, interested parishioners meet monthly to discuss current issues and address current concerns. Through partnerships and individual initiatives, participants on this committee take action with the hope of supporting positive change in our community and beyond.
Holy Apostles Knitters
Participation in this group extends beyond our congregation to our many volunteers and those who support our soup kitchen near and far. Contributions of hand knit hats, scarves, mittens and socks are collected, blessed during Sunday worship, and distributed to our soup kitchen guests during the winter months. Offerings may be mailed or dropped off at Holy Apostles at any time and are always gratefully received.
