The SEJC has been very active this year. Our coffee-hour table continues to be a good place for the committee and others in the parish to put out information on issues that concern them. Tables throughout the year covered such topics as welfare reform and cutbacks to the Emergency Food Assistance Program; new oil drilling in Alaska (which yielded a record sixty-seven letters going to our elected reps); the development of Chelsea's piers; the situation in Iraq; and our support of the United Nations (which also resulted in a large number of letters to officials).

In the past few months, we received an e-mail from Andrew Davison in Cambridge regarding an online organization called InclusiveChurch.Net that had arisen to affirm the inclusive nature of the Anglican Communion and to challenge some of the conservative voices that have come up in opposition to full participation of lesbian and gay persons. He encouraged our parish to sign on to the Inclusive Church's Statement of Belief on their website. The Statement was sent out through the SEJC listserv and then was reviewed by the vestry. At our last meeting, the vestry agreed to endorse the Statement of Belief. We have posted the Statement of Belief below but for more information, all are encouraged to visit the Inclusive Church website, http://www.inclusivechurch.net/. Individuals are welcome to sign on to the Statement of Belief, as well as parishes.

A Declaration of Belief
We affirm that the Church's mission, in obedience to Holy Scripture, is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in every generation. We acknowledge that this is Good News for people regardless of their sex, race or sexual orientation. We believe that, in order to strengthen the Gospel's proclamation of justice to the world, and for the greater glory of God, the Church's own common life must be justly ordered. To that end, we call on our Church to live out the promise of the Gospel; to celebrate the diverse gifts of all members of the body of Christ; and in the ordering of our common life to open the ministries of deacon, priest and bishop to those so called to serve by God, regardless of their sex, race or sexual orientation.

Other activities:

  • Committee members and others continue to host at GTS's homeless shelter.
  • Several committee members attended a meeting at a church in Brooklyn regarding the detention of Middle Eastern men in the wake of September 11. This was followed by an after-church presentation by several of the Brooklyn groups organizing around this issue.
  • Committee members helped organize and staff a table at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen street fair, raising money for the Episcopal church in Jerusalem.
  • The sock drive collecting socks for soup kitchen guests is happening again this year.
  • The committee organized a well-attended group outing to see the movie “Bowling for Columbine.”
  • On January 12, Lucinda Mosher led an after-church presentation on her and the Diocese's efforts to raise money to rebuild a mosque destroyed by US bombs in Kabul.
  • On January 19, a parish discussion was held to deal with feelings and issues surrounding the imminent possibility of war with Iraq.
