Parish Life at Holy Apostles
History
Holy Apostles was founded
in 1844 as the result of
an outreach by Trinity
Church to immigrants who
worked on the Hudson
River waterfront to the
west of the Church’s
location in the Chelsea
section of Manhattan, and
social activism and the
desire for social justice
continue to be integral
to our identity as a
parish. In 1977, two of
the first women priests
in the Diocese of New
York, one openly gay,
were ordained at Holy
Apostles. In 2003 many
Holy Apostles members
marched in opposition to
the invasion of Iraq. In
2006, Bishop Gene
Robinson of New Hampshire
preached to an overflow
crowd on Gay Pride
Sunday, and Holy Apostles
has been an opponent of
efforts to deny him, or
any other gay priest, the
right to be treated in
accordance with our
baptismal vows.
Although uniquely united
in our commitment to
inclusion and justice in
and outside the church,
the congregation is
diverse in incomes, ages,
careers, marital status
and sexual orientation.
Average Sunday
attendance has been
steady at 106-108 for
2005-2008 and membership
has hovered at about 160
for the same period.
About a third live in the
immediate neighborhood
and the balance elsewhere
in Manhattan, the outer
boroughs, or the suburbs.
A significant number have
graduate or professional
degrees, but the Sunday
congregation includes
every educational level.
Worship
The center of all our activities is the Parish
Eucharist on Sunday mornings. The attention to the detail and
meaning of the liturgy, the
care with which the music is chosen and presented, the eager participation of the
congregation, and the work of the clergy all intersect here, where we are nourished to be
the Body of Christ in the world. |
Fellowship
Visitors to Holy Apostles immediately notice how much we enjoy each
other. We get together for coffee hour after the Eucharist, for parties following festival
services throughout the year, and for frequent informal gatherings and celebrations.
A sense of community always prevails through our
lively
parish groups that meet regularly and parish
participation in the liturgical life
of the
church. |
|
Christian Education
Adult education thrives at Holy Apostles, with groups studying the
Bible, liturgy, spirituality, and various contemporary theological, social, and pastoral
issues. Parishioners often offer classes on topics of their particular interest and
expertise. |
|
Pastoral Care
When one of us is in trouble, we reach out to
that person. Sometimes the clergy organize this; often
it seems to happen spontaneously among parishioners. The
parish is a community in Christ, where we can share
openly with one another our joys and sorrows, our fears
and our faith.

Children
and Youth
We have a nursery and an active church school for children grades
K-6, with team teaching and a curriculum especially tailored to our students. Our older
children participate actively in the life and liturgy of the parish. Children of every age are valued members of our community. |

Our Mission
Called together by the God who loves all people,
we, the people of the Church of the Holy Apostles,
seek to share God's love with one another and the world around us.
We rejoice together in the Sunday Eucharist,
the center of our life together. Friends and fellow pilgrims, clergy and lay
persons, we are strengthened to nurture each other's spiritual growth
and to respond compassionately to the needs of our world.
Reflecting the rich tradition and diversity of
the Anglican Communion and the
Episcopal Church, we invite all to join us.
We welcome those celebrating faith or struggling
with doubt, those seeking both spiritual and physical nourishment,
and those of diverse ages, races, and sexual orientations.
Together, we strive to seek and serve Christ in
all persons. -
Adopted by the Vestry, June 22, 1995
