Cowart was on the staff
of Trinity Wall Street on
September 11, 2001, and
helped organize the 24/7
volunteer ministry to
recovery workers at St.
Paul’s Chapel. In 2005,
she was called to
Louisiana to organize the
post-Hurricane Katrina
disaster response for the
Episcopal Church. Cowart
describes as service
activism the efforts of
growing numbers of people
of faith “to expand
generosity’s reach and
power to meet need in
forgotten, forbidding
places, or in response to
brutally violent
situations.” An
American Awakening is
summarized by her
publishers at Seabury
Books in this way:
Cowart’s new book is a
memoir of dramatic
experiences linked to
social commentary. She
thinks and writes her way
into a new understanding
of what religious faith
requires not just when
disaster strikes but in
relation to the
structural inequities
that limit the
opportunities for
millions of Americans.
There is an army of
volunteers ready to help,
and they are becoming
more visible, more
organized, and reaching,
in her words, “critical
mass.” They are linked by
websites, e-mail, and by
similar views,
aspirations, and
volunteer experiences. In
the shadow of a
presidential election,
she ponders the ways that
the disparate army can be
made even more visible
and united.
Please join us to hear
this compelling guest and
her timely presentation
on October 7 and then for

of service activism on
subsequent Tuesdays,

21, at 7:00pm. Those
