Holy
Apostles’ Director of Music, David J. Hurd, Jr., Mus.D.,
was honored at a festival entitled “A Tribute to
David Hurd:
Composer for All Seasons” held at St. Philip’s Church,
Brooklyn, on Sunday, April 10, 2005. The festival featured
RejoicEnsemble at its 20th anniversary
performance as well as choirs and choristers from the
Metropolitan Area. It featured a new work commemorating
the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by Dr. Hurd
entitled, “In Honor of Martin.” The text was based on a
poem of Jamie McKenzie entitled, “Standing Tall.” This
tribute received funding from the New York State Council
on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the
New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the
Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
At this
gala event, Dr. Hurd received the Bishop’s Cross from
the Rt. Rev. Orris Walker, Bishop of Long Island (which
includes Brooklyn). The “Bishop’s Cross” is the highest
honor a bishop of the Episcopal Church can bestow. The
citation accompanying this award is reproduced below.
David Hurd also received a citation from the Vestry, Clergy, and
Congregation of the Church of the Holy Apostles. It was
presented to him by Holy Apostles rector, Father Bill
Greenlaw. That citation is also reproduced below.
Congratulations, David!
